Dr. Higgins is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, Colorado. After completing his residency in internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian's Columbia University Medical Center, he pursued a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic where he subsequently complicated dual subspecialty training in cardiac critical care and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, serving as chief fellow during his final year of training before being appointed to the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2021. In addition to his clinical roles with these sections, he serves as associate director of the cardiac intensive care unit and director of the regional shock program. His research interests include the intersection of heart failure and critical care and mitigation of harm in temporary mechanical circulatory support.
