Dr. Edward Hickey is a congenital heart surgeon committed to ensuring that all children born with congenital heart disease live healthy and active lives well into adulthood. His focus is on expanding the Adult Congenital Heart Program at Texas Children’s Hospital, addressing the historical gap in expertise for adults with congenital heart disease.
In partnership with Dr. Peter Ermis, Medical Director of Adult Congenital Heart Disease, Dr. Hickey is leading the expansion of Texas Children’s Adult Congenital Heart Program. This will include a state-of-the-art center on the 24th floor of Legacy Tower, featuring intensive care beds, diagnostic units, and rehabilitation facilities, making it the most advanced Adult Congenital Heart Program in the southern U.S.
Dr. Hickey holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Southampton Medical School (1999) and completed his Doctoral Research Thesis (DM) at the same institution in 2007. He completed his residency in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Toronto (2010), and he holds the FRCSC in Cardiac Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (2010).
Previously, Dr. Hickey led the largest Canadian ACH surgical program at Toronto’s hospital, where he also established the busiest ACH transplant practice in Canada. He introduced "flight plan" reviews for patient journeys, utilizing aviation modeling for risk containment and quality improvement. His clinical interests include neonatal, pediatric, and adult congenital heart surgery, heart transplantation, ECMO, and advanced therapies.
