Daniel De Backer is specialized in intensive care medicine and obtained his PhD thesis at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
Daniel. De Backer is Head of Intensive Care at CHIREC Hospitals (Brussels and Braine l’Alleud-Waterloo) and Professor of Intensive Care at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Brussels).
His main fields of investigations are sepsis, organ dysfunction and support (including ECMO), circulatory failure (shock) and its treatment (including vasoactive agents and mechanical support), hemodynamic monitoring (including echocardiography), hepato-splanchnic circulation and microcirculatory disorders.
Daniel De Backer has signed more than 400 original articles (H-Index 100), serves as reviewer for 30 journals, and is Associate Editor of several journals including “Critical Care”, “Annals of Intensive Care” and “Journal of Intensive Medicine”.
Daniel De Backer was President of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine in 2014-2016.
